Following the Junot Díaz News

Following the Junot Díaz news lately after the recent New Yorker piece, and wanted to share my favorite passage by him, below. It’s hard to hear when anyone’s been treated in a way that echoes for the rest of their lives. I will say he put into words what myself and other women couldn't about love and life, for many years.

“This is how you lose her.

You lose her when you forget to remember the little things that mean the world to her: the sincerity in a stranger’s voice during a trip to the grocery store, the delight of finding something lost or forgotten like a sticker from when she was five, the selflessness of a child giving a part of his meal to another, the scent of new books in the store, the surprise short but honest notes she tucks in her journal and others you could only see if you look closely.

You must remember when she forgets.

You lose her when you don’t notice that she notices everything about you: your use of the proper punctuation that tells her continuation rather than finality, your silence when you’re about to ask a question but you think anything you’re about to say to her would be silly, your mindless humming when it is too quiet, your handwriting when you sign your name on blank sheets of paper, your muted laughter when you are trying to be polite, and more and more of what you are, which you don’t even know about yourself, because she pays attention.

She remembers when you forget.

You lose her for every second you make her feel less and less of the beauty that she is. When you make her feel that she is replaceable. She wants to feel cherished. When you make her feel that you are fleeting. She wants you to stay. When you make her feel inadequate. She wants to know that she is enough and she does not need to change for you, nor for anyone else because she is she and she is beautiful, kind and good.

You must learn her.

You must know the reason why she is silent. You must trace her weakest spots. You must write to her. You must remind her that you are there. You must know how long it takes for her to give up. You must be there to hold her when she is about to.

You must love her because many have tried and failed. And she wants to know that she is worthy to be loved, that she is worthy to be kept.

And, this is how you keep her.”

Listening to: 'A Life That's Good'

Being from Texas, there are a few country songs that bring me back. Started watching Nashville recently. Really liked the storyline between Deacon and Rayna. This song and 'Sanctuary'; the feels.

'When I'm all alone or in a crowd'

In a quiet place or where music's loud

If I'm on the road, or in the other room

That's how you know, I'm thinkin' of you

When the flowers bloom, when the leaves turn brown

when the sun is hot, when the snow falls down, down

when the clouds are gray, and the sky's are blue

that's how you know, I'm thinkin' of you

You're always the first and the last thing on this heart of mine

No matter where I go or what I do, I'm thinkin' of you.

Storm King for our Birthday Last Year

'Whip, whip

Run me like a racehorse

Pull me like a ripcord

Break me down and build me up

I wanna be the slip, slip

Word upon your lip, lip

Letter that you rip, rip

Break me down and build me up

Don't wanna be the parenthetical, hypothetical

Working on something that I'm proud of, out of the box

Whatever it takes,

'Cause I love the adrenaline in my veins,

'Cause I love how it feels when I break the chains,

I do what it takes.'

I want to be friends with the youtuber who commented this under the video,

'I let my goldfish listen to this, Now he's a shark.'

Happy Valentines (Galentines, or Singles Awareness) Day

"Unless it's mad, passionate, extraordinary love,  it's a waste of your time.

There are too many mediocre things in life; Love shouldn't be one of them."

-Dream for an Insomniac

Listening to Michelle Obama's Spotify 'Forever Mine' playlist for Barack <3

"Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

-Mark 10:9

My favorite gift was this set by Waxing Kara, a local company here in Maryland.

Everything smelled amazing and my skin never felt softer.

Seared steaks w olive oil in the skillet then added butter and garlic. Cooked spinach in sauce and drizzled over baked potatoes (450 degrees for 45 min)

Froze strawberries 🍓. Melted chocolate chips in the microwave and dipped them.

One of my favorite dessert places Milk from back in New York was able to deliver cookies in time as well. We go hard for the holidays. I think St. Valentine would be proud.

Rewatching True Detective Season 1

So many good quotes. I like this one.

At the end of the season, the two detectives are looking up at the stars. One says something about dark and light. Woody Harrelson's character says 'If you ask me the dark's got a lot more territory' and Rust Cole (Matthew McConaughey) says 'no you got it all wrong- once there was just dark. If you ask me the light's winning.'

🏡 12 Days at a Hotel

You try it sometime. Some of it is fun. I like breakfast buffets- and if you stay at a Residence Inn like we did, I hope they have on-the-go nutella packets and greek yogurt on deck.

However, there are unfamiliar noises and smells you start to notice more after a few days. I guess it's a give-and-take.

advice to the young

This is the article my friend sent me. Just interesting stuff on why we're here, and if an older version of myself could talk to me now.

The woman who wrote this reply, eventually wrote the book "Wild" which is being made into an upcoming film starring Reese witherspoon.

http://therumpus.net/2011/02/dear-sugar-the-rumpus-advice-column-64/

"There are some things you can’t understand yet. Your life will be a great and continuous unfolding. It’s good you’ve worked hard to resolve childhood issues while in your twenties, but understand that what you resolve will need to be resolved again. And again. You will come to know things that can only be known with the wisdom of age and the grace of years. Most of those things will have to do with forgiveness."

"Most things will be okay eventually, but not everything will be. Sometimes you’ll put up a good fight and lose. Sometimes you’ll hold on really hard and realize there is no choice but to let go. Acceptance is a small, quiet room."

"The useless days will add up to something. The shitty waitressing jobs. The hours writing in your journal. The long meandering walks. The hours reading poetry and story collections and novels and dead people’s diaries and wondering about sex and God and whether you should shave under your arms or not. These things are your becoming."

Also, just as a PS I've included Patti Smith's advice to the young as well. Slightly different, but still very worthwhile. http://vimeo.com/57857893
