note to self: read more

I've been reading a lot lately. I'd forgotten how therapeutic it is, and how happy it makes me.
My new favorite book is "True Love" by Ivan Turgenev, it's such a beautiful little book, and I love stories about when this character first discovers love, and I think it makes me feel empowered when I read about women who don't love the main character back but flirt around. The first character like that who I really liked was Estella Havisham, when she's told to "break his heart" by one of the most frightening characters in literature, at least to me, her guardian Ms. Havisham. But this character in "True Love" was made so much more well-rounded because she does end up falling in love, just not with the right person. At one point, she says this "I am a flirt: I have no heart: I have an actor's nature."
"Give me your hand and I will stick a pin into it, and you will feel ashamed in front of this young man. And it will hurt you, and still you will be kind enough to laugh"

And still, of course, the man loves her forever. Even after he's old and she's dead (oops, spoiler).

Also I've been rereading "Ways of Seeing" by John Berger. This book is also on my top ten list now!

The Bridge (flick here for film website)

Costarred in this short film starring Young K. Lee, directed by Philipp, earlier this year. It's about a korean man, disconnected from his daughter through the loss of his wife, who mysteriously finds himself returning to the same spot as he crosses the Brooklyn Bridge. Only his awareness and empathy eventually lead him to the other side.

Thinly Veiled Movie Poster

I was emailed this today! I guess it's coming out this fall. So exciting! (I'm the red box) (click the image to enlarge)
My bday party was friday night! A couple friends came over to the new apartment and then went to Flannery's pub. So fun! I had two drinks basically, and then passed out. :( But luckily I had good friends with me to keep me safe. You're only 21 once, right?

my 21st bday!

I turned 21 today! Although I still look like I'm that number backwards (12), I suppose I am now finally legal and an adult! Don't feel it yet though...
Yesterday was the first sign of it, I went to work at school and got a surprise bday cake along with some other people with summer birthdays. It was delicious and so nice.
And then, today, at HBO, I got a beautiful 'birthday girl' martini glass, and another surprise cake!
Then GaRam took me out to an amazing indian restaurant after work, it was in the village, so delicious and delightful and well-spiced.
Friday night I am going to celebrate. Tonight though I am going to sleep at a reasonable hour since I have to wake up at 8 am for work tomorrow.
I'm so happy to've reached the big 2-1!
