Interview with fellow Blogger 'Aesthetic Distance' freshly moved to Baltimore: "Cruel Intentions: Andrea Chen"
Cruel Intentions: Andrea Chen
Words and images by me. Model: Andrea Chen. Hair and Makeup: Courtney McCormick. Wardrobe: Megan Larkin. Intern: Kate Christofano. Shot on location at the Hotel Monaco in Baltimore. Rosary, mine. Bra, Andrea's.
This shoot took a long time to produce. Finding the right model and right location proved to be harder than I anticipated. I didn't want to go literal and cast a Sarah Michelle Gellar lookalike. I wanted our take to be different. Then the Instagram gods introduced me to actress Andrea Chen (Boyhood and Mistress America) and that was that, we found our Katherine. Courtney came up with the idea to shoot at the Hotel Monaco downtown to match the opulent surroundings of Katherine's apartment and bedroom.
Let's get to know Andrea.
You have a really impressive filmography. Can you tell me about how you got into acting?
Thank you! I was a quieter child, but one thing I really liked to do was sing opera, and that's how I fell into acting. It was the weirdest thing to get hooked into - but maybe because it was so different from me, I thought of it as the ultimate challenge. My father was also really into it and classical music in general, so he would drive me to lessons and it was something we bonded over. The idea of filling up an auditorium with just your voice thrilled me; larger than life. To do opera I also had to take piano (to sight read music) and theater (to feel comfortable on stage). I got an agent around that time in Houston, and did some voiceover work. I became a bit discouraged when I learned your voice doesn't fully mature until your 40's. I don't think it was until I went to New York for college that I got serious about acting. I met my agent there at a birthday party an actor friend brought me to, and I started doing bigger projects. It's still something that's a challenge and an escape for me, and very separate from my real life.
Boyhood was one of the best movies of 2014. What was it like working with Richard Linklater?
I loved Boyhood. Watching it, as someone who grew up in Texas during that time, and getting to work with Richard Linklater was awesome. He was very empathetic, and easy to get along with. We had kind of a living script, where if it didn't feel right, you could change what you were saying, and be as truthful to the character as you wanted. I loved that he'd also lived in New York for a bit, and chosen to come to Texas and live on a farm and be around his family and chickens. I respected that he preferred that kind of life rather than be surrounded by industry people and those in the business.
The movie was filmed all over Texas with a lot of scenes in Austin, TX. What was your favorite thing about Austin? I used to live in Austin and miss it terribly, so I love to talk to people about that city!
There's something very special about that city, and whenever I meet someone from Texas, it's a bit unfair, but I instantly am biased to like them a little more. If I had to pick one thing I'd say the barbeque there is my favorite thing- you can't get it anywhere else! Amiright? There's nothing like the fresh-cut, sauced ribs you get out there.
Much has been said about institutional racism and Hollywood casting. How has it affected you as an Asian American actress?
I get on a rant when it comes to this subject. One of my favorite books is The Hypersexuality of Race: Performing Asian/American Women on Screen and Scene. I heard the author give a talk at NYU back in the day, and found her fascinating. She brought up the famous line from Full Metal Jacket, 'me so horny ' 'me love you long-time', and how it was repurposed in Lucy Liu's role in Payback, one of Lucy's first roles ever. In it, she says the same line but in a dominatrix outfit, kicking butt.
The reason I cite this example is that we all bring stereotypes into our experience of assimilating into an American perspective. There are things that can be said derogatorily about all the races, and perhaps Asian roles have it the worst because culturally we don't seem to encourage our children to become performers and actors in America. Maybe part of the problem is because casting departments aren't picking us over 'safer' choices.
If we can take what we've inherited, and spin it - take power from it and inform the roles and projects we get with our past experiences and make our roles our own- I think things could change faster.
You mentioned that Cruel Intentions is among your favorite movies and in this photo shoot, you're playing the part of Katherine. Do you relate to her character at all? How about her style?
I always loved Katherine! Cruel Intentions was on my mind recently too when I found out they're making a TV show from it. It seemed like Sarah Michelle Gellar had so much fun playing her, and I always admired how confident, salacious and dark she was. To blend into the last question, I think my favorite roles are those that have had experiences, where the character owns it completely and it empowers them. To a certain extent, I guess I relate to that- without those destructive tendencies. Her style is pretty emblematic of that- love the fitted formalwear and rosaries. It's a lie to say religion doesn't inform who we are, or at least, what we're hiding.
How would you describe your everyday style?
I'm super comfortable with my style. My favorite clothes are my boyfriend's and making them mine, like wearing his huge loud rugby shirt with dark jeans, high heeled boots and a fitted blazer, with my hair in a high bun.
So what do you think of Baltimore so far?
Baltimore has been pretty good to be so far. I'm still exploring, but there are some neighborhoods that are fast becoming my favorites. My boyfriend and I just got approval on a townhome in Federal Hill after bouncing around Mt. Vernon and Catonsville sublets. I've been finding a lot of places around the Inner Harbor area that I like. It's nice to eat and shop and be by the water. Even before I moved here I enjoyed visiting. And I didn't realize there are so many amazing places to study here - MICA, Peabody, Johns Hopkins. It makes me want to go back to school.
Any new projects you're working on right now?
The next thing I have coming out I think is Seeds, a sci-fi film described as Lolita meets The Shining, starring myself and Trevor Long. His brother is the director, we shot it in Rhode Island in this really beautiful area. I think it's the perfect blend of romantic and creepy. It was the first script that I started reading late one night and finished in one sitting. I called my agent basically immediately after - it was that good - saying I was interested. The Director of Photography Eu Nah Lee and I worked together when I was back in college, and she has an amazing eye.
I also hear the new Power Rangers movie is getting made soon. And It would make my life to play Trini Kwan...

Where do you think heaven is?
( an email to mark)
I have too much time to think right now and I was thinking about two different conflicting theories about where heaven and hell are. Like, could heaven be in the center of the world? The heart of everything, that the pull of gravity rotates around? Or is it above the decaying leaves and bones and disintegrating stones, above all that in the sky? When people aren't worried about the day to day of existing, that's when they have time to think about their souls. Getting away from the dirt and meat of living and projecting it into something separate from what you see all around and at our feet. You know in the bible the devil is called the Prince of the sky? And he fell from heaven? So where are the two places? Do the Catholics have a fulfilling answer? My parents always said when I had questions like this that some things are just bigger than our understanding but I was interested in your thoughts.

'he's not perfect'
i heard this at the wedding saturday and thought you guys might enjoy.
the groom read it after his vows.
“He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give. Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.”

advice to the young
This is the article my friend sent me. Just interesting stuff on why we're here, and if an older version of myself could talk to me now.
The woman who wrote this reply, eventually wrote the book "Wild" which is being made into an upcoming film starring Reese witherspoon.

"There are some things you can’t understand yet. Your life will be a great and continuous unfolding. It’s good you’ve worked hard to resolve childhood issues while in your twenties, but understand that what you resolve will need to be resolved again. And again. You will come to know things that can only be known with the wisdom of age and the grace of years. Most of those things will have to do with forgiveness."
"Most things will be okay eventually, but not everything will be. Sometimes you’ll put up a good fight and lose. Sometimes you’ll hold on really hard and realize there is no choice but to let go. Acceptance is a small, quiet room."
"The useless days will add up to something. The shitty waitressing jobs. The hours writing in your journal. The long meandering walks. The hours reading poetry and story collections and novels and dead people’s diaries and wondering about sex and God and whether you should shave under your arms or not. These things are your becoming."
Also, just as a PS I've included Patti Smith's advice to the young as well. Slightly different, but still very worthwhile. http://vimeo.com/57857893

In a quiet place or where music's loud
If I'm on the road, or in the other room
That's how you know, I'm thinkin' of you
When the flowers bloom, when the leaves turn brown
when the sun is hot, when the snow falls down, down
when the clouds are gray, and the sky's are blue
that's how you know, I'm thinkin' of you
You're always the first and the last thing on this heart of mine
No matter where I go or what I do, I'm thinkin' of you.

this is how you keep her
You must know the reason why she is silent. You must trace her weakest spots. You must write to her. You must remind her that you are there. You must know how long it takes for her to give up. You must be there to hold her when she is about to.
You must love her because many have tried and failed. And she wants to know that she is worthy to be loved, that she is worthy to be kept.
And, this is how you keep her.”
